Music Journey

I first picked up a guitar in 2001 when I was 12. My mum is a songwriter and singer of the 1960’s variety folk. It was an obsession from the first chord learned. It very quickly took over the Playstation two obsession, which in hindsight was a good thing for me. I was recently back in Eugene, Oregon and got to strum a bit on the Big Baby Taylor that I loved so much, and it’s apparent that it was more than just a hobby even back then. It was a therapeutic. The frets are worn down and there are pick marks that look like frantic cat scratches.

Music journey, that it is. NOT a destination and I hope it never is. Music is what I love to do and I’ve been blessed to move to Nashville, Tennessee and give music city a shot. It’s been many things. I’ve clocked hundreds of hours on lower broadway singing in Honky Tonks, and i’ve spent days upon days in a tour bus reading in my bunk to pass the time between venues. One of the books I read was PILLARS OF THE EARTH by Ken Follett. It’s about the building of a cathedral in the fictitious town of Kingsbridge. It reminded me again of this word, journey. The beautiful cathedrals of Europe sometimes took hundreds of years to complete. And many hands. I’m in this for life, and I hope the music I make will live on after I’m gone.

It feels good to write. Songs, or just flow of consciousness. That’s what I want to make this site. A place where the truth happens. In October it’ll be five years in Nashville. I was told it’s a five year town but as I approach that mark, people are saying more likely it’s a ten year town. How about no limit town. I’m getting married June 8th on Roan Mountain in East Tennessee, and I really feel the energy of new beginnings. The music I make from here on I want to be a representation of the love and growth and series of surrenders that life is.

GOD BLESS,

Jake Martini
